Synopsis

During a summer stay at her grandfather’s home, six-year-old Hotaru Takegawa wanders into a forest said to be home to spirits and becomes lost. While frightened and calling for help, she encounters Gin, a masked, enigmatic boy who appears and offers assistance. Elated to find another living person, Hotaru rushes toward him, but Gin recoils and pushes her away. He explains the painful reason: a powerful curse afflicts him so that any physical contact with a human will cause him to cease to exist. Despite Gin’s warning that she should stay away, Hotaru returns and slowly forms a close companionship with him. Over the years their connection deepens into stronger feelings, and they confront the emotional and existential limits that the curse and fate place on their relationship.
