Synopsis

A reserved avid reader lives emotionally distant from those around him, convinced that others have no interest in him and returning the sentiment. His routine shifts when he uncovers a handwritten volume titled Living with Dying and realizes it is a private journal belonging to his outgoing, popular classmate Sakura Yamauchi. Sakura reveals to him that she is battling a fatal pancreatic condition and that her time is limited—knowledge she keeps within her family and hidden even from close friends. Initially indifferent to her revelation, he resists expressing compassion. Gradually, however, Sakura's persistent cheerfulness and spontaneous behavior draw him into accompanying her through the days she has left. As their contrasting temperaments interact, a bond deepens; her impulsive zest unsettles his calm isolation and, over time, leads him to open up and learn what it means to truly live.
