Sophie Hatter, a modest hatmaker's daughter resigned to a quiet life, becomes entangled with a moving, steam-belching castle inhabited by the charismatic and notorious wizard Howl. After a brief rescue from a disturbing incident, Sophie is struck by a curse from the Witch of the Waste that ages her into an elderly woman. To undo the enchantment, Sophie embarks on a journey inside Howl’s eccentric, self-propelled castle, living alongside an assortment of unusual allies—a volatile fire spirit and a lively scarecrow among them—while their kingdom is torn apart by a fiercer conflict. The story follows Sophie’s efforts to reclaim her former self amid supernatural dangers, personal tensions, and the upheaval of war.
