Synopsis

In 1991, arcade gaming dominates youth culture, and sixth-grader Haruo Yaguchi aspires to become a professional player in a scene not yet widely established. His skill at arcade machines has brought him local renown and a strong sense of self-worth, which is abruptly undermined when classmate Akira Oono bests him at Street Fighter II. Akira combines wealth, looks, and intelligence in Haruo’s eyes—attributes he has not valued—yet her victory challenges his long-held belief in his unquestioned dominance. Conflicted emotions follow: resentment toward the rival who toppled his pride, and a reluctant desire for a competitor who can match his abilities. The story follows Haruo as he grapples with these mixed feelings and the implications for his dream of gaming excellence.
