Synopsis

Makoto Edamura, driven into petty crime by a streak of bad luck, ekes out a living through pickpocketing and small cons. After attempting to fleece a seemingly naive tourist, he realizes the tables have been turned and that law enforcement is closing in. While fleeing, he encounters the same tourist again, who reveals himself as Laurent Thierry, a fellow confidence artist, and Makoto tails him to Los Angeles. To defend his self-styled claim as "Japan's Greatest Swindler," Makoto issues a challenge to Laurent to decide which of them is the superior scammer. Laurent accepts and deposits them at an opulent estate, declaring their mark to be the foremost mafia boss on the West Coast. As Makoto becomes entangled with Laurent, his flamboyant crew, and the international web of elaborate fraud, he finds his proclaimed talents repeatedly strained and confronts consequences far beyond his initial schemes.
