Synopsis

The year 2045 marks a period of global instability following a widespread economic collapse and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. These events have initiated a prolonged conflict known as the Sustainable War, designed to continue indefinitely. Despite the underlying threat to humanity posed by AI, its full impact has not yet permeated everyday existence. Public Security Section 9, under the command of the fully prosthetic cyborg Kusanagi Motoko, deploys to Tokyo, a city devastated by a prior conflict, to address cybercriminal activities perpetrated by the emerging Posthuman population. Upon arrival, they encounter a refugee collective identified as "N" and an antagonistic American Special Forces unit. As the danger of nuclear conflict escalates due to a compromised submarine, the confrontation between Public Security Section 9, American forces, and the Posthumans intensifies into a complex three-sided struggle.
