When the Mount Nibel reactor is plagued by monstrous incidents, Shinra Electric Power Company sends its top combat unit, SOLDIER, to examine the site. First Class Sephiroth, accompanied by fellow SOLDIER Zack Fair and a small escort of company guards, is tasked with evaluating the reactor’s state on Shinra’s orders. In the village that depends on the reactor, Sephiroth uncovers the origin of the creatures and the hidden truth behind Shinra’s Jenova Project. Months later, a changed Zack runs through the forest, no longer holding the heroic aspirations he once had. He becomes a target of Shinra’s General Affairs Department—the Turks—who aim to eliminate the incriminating evidence tied to both of them.
