Synopsis

In a far-off future, humanity survives within enormous fortified cities called Plantations after being nearly wiped out by massive creatures named Klaxosaurs. Children raised in these settlements are conditioned to operate giant combat machines called FranXX in male-female teams; their upbringing centers solely on this role, and their value is measured by their ability to protect the species. Hiro, once hopeful about becoming a FranXX pilot, has lost confidence after failing an assessment and withdraws from his peers. While avoiding his class's graduation, he discovers a horned girl who identifies herself as Zero Two, a codename tied to a notorious FranXX pilot labeled the “Partner Killer.” A sudden Klaxosaur assault soon strikes the Plantation; Zero Two fights but her machine is badly damaged and crashes nearby. With her partner killed, she asks Hiro to join her in piloting the damaged FranXX, and together they defeat the creature. This unexpected pairing gives Hiro a chance to reclaim his purpose, but the encounter raises uncertainties about the consequences of his choice.
