Synopsis

In a realm submerged beneath an unending expanse of sand, a self-contained island called the Mud Whale drifts across the wasteland. Within its bounds is an old settlement whose people often bear a condition known as being Marked—an ability that grants supernatural powers while shortening life. Chakuro, a young archivist driven by curiosity, records each newly sighted island. Most discoveries reveal only deserted ruins and traces of vanished populations. When, after half a year, another island appears on the horizon, Chakuro and companions join a scouting party to investigate. Their exploration uncovers relics of a long-lost civilization, and within the decayed structures Chakuro finds a mysterious girl. Her arrival sets in motion changes that reshape Chakuro’s path and the precarious balance of life on the Mud Whale.
