Synopsis

In 2046, humans grow increasingly wary of robots, and those latest models—called Seconds—face worsening danger. Detective Ross Sylibus, driven by the death of his partner at a robot's hands, requests a transfer to Mars. Shortly after arriving, he becomes involved in a homicide tied to a fellow passenger, a country singer found dead during the flight. On the surface he encounters his new partner, Armitage, a tough, outspoken female officer. As more women are murdered, the probe exposes a deeper layer: a previously hidden generation of machines called Thirds. These Thirds begin to disappear in growing numbers as a serial killer targets them in a campaign to eradicate that line. In the course of pursuing the perpetrator, Armitage makes a startling revelation about her own nature—she is a Third—complicating the investigation and the fragile balance between humans and their creations.
