Synopsis

Rugby centers on a ball carrier advancing past goalposts while teammates and opponents engage physically; passes may go only backward and play continues after tackles. Kenji Gion, a small but spirited freshman at Kanagawa High, meets the tall, reserved Sumiaki Iwashimizu after the opening ceremony, and both are invited to watch the rugby club. Observing a match, Gion sees that, despite size advantages for some, the sport offers roles suited to various builds and immediately believes he can thrive. He joins the team; Iwashimizu initially refuses, but Gion persistently brings him into the club. Together they submit to demanding training with the shared objective of reaching and succeeding at Hanazono, the national high school rugby tournament.
