Mabel West, daughter of mystery novelist Raymond West, resists her father's wish for a conventional upbringing and chooses to pursue a career in detection. Determined to learn from the renowned Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot in London, she travels there seeking to serve as his assistant. After gaining her father's hesitant consent, Mabel begins a life filled with investigations and tension, punctuated by her obligation to spend occasional periods at her great-aunt Jane Marple's home in the quiet village of St. Mary Mead.
